NJ gov’s office: Hoboken mayor to resign

TRENTON, N.J. — A spokesman for New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine says a northern New Jersey mayor charged in a federal corruption case will resign soon.

Corzine spokesman Robert Corrales says lawyers for Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano told the governor’s office Thursday that the mayor would step down within 24 hours.

Cammarano lawyer Joseph Hayden says his client will “render a decision” Friday. He would not elaborate.

The 32-year-old Democrat was arrested in last week’s sting. He would become the second elected official to resign since the arrests.

Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell stepped down Tuesday.

Corzine has urged all six elected officials charged in the case to leave office.
