New cost ceilings for ND campus presidents’ homes

BISMARCK, N.D. — North Dakota state auditors will be going over cost overruns in the construction of new homes for the presidents of North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota.

The state Board of Higher Education voted Friday to approve the audit.

Both homes were expected to cost no more than $900,000. The NDSU president’s house came in at more than $2 million while the UND president’s house cost almost $1.3 million.

Board member Mike Haugen wanted a private accounting firm to do it rather than state auditors, but he was overruled.

Lawmakers will be asked to set new expense ceilings for the projects to account for the cost overruns. Both houses were paid for with money from private donors and the universities themselves.

Board President Richie Smith says private donors should cover the entire cost of the projects. NDSU put in $516,000 to finish the Fargo house, while the UND president’s house in Grand Forks cost $261,000 in state funds to complete.
