Mulayam meets Nepal president

July 28th, 2009 KATHMANDU - British actress Joanna Lumley, who is in Nepal on a five day visit after spearheading a high profile campaign to allow Gurkha soldiers and their families to settle in Britain, met President Rambaram Yadav, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala separately. Accompanying her to the meetings held at the Singh Durbar, the seat of the government, was a 30-member delegation, including Liberal Democratic Party leader Peter Carol, Folkestone town counselor Dhana Gurung, Maiti-Nepal president Anuradha Koirala and several foreign journalists.

May 25th, 2009 KATHMANDU - Indian Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood and United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) chief Karen Ladgren have separately met newly elected Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal at the latter's residence, Koteshwor. They congratulated Nepal on his election as the new Prime Minister and extended best wishes for his successful term.

May 14th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh said Thursday that that he will never desert party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. 'Main jeevan bhar Mulayam Singh ko nahin choroonga (I will not leave Mulayam Singh in my lifetime),' Amar Singh told reporters here.

May 7th, 2009 LUCKNOW - Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh had an argument with a poll official in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri constituency after his bodyguards were stopped from entering the polling booth alongwith him. The former chief minister, who has Z plus security, got angry when an election official at the polling station in Saifai locality, said that as per the norms only one person could accompany him into the booth.

April 27th, 2009 LUCKNOW - Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati Monday charged rival Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav with misusing the state's development funds, saying that as many as 1,000 villages could have been developed with the amount. 'The money spent by Mulayam Singh for giving a facelift to (his native village) Saifai alone could have brought development in 1,000 villages of the state,' Mayawati said at an election rally in Etawah district.

March 24th, 2009 KATHMANDU - Power Trading Corporation (PTC) of India has proposed to supply additional 500 MW electricity to Nepal. Nepalnews quoted Shankar Prasad Koirala, secretary at the Ministry of Water Resources, as saying that PTC had stated in a letter to the ministry that it could provide 500 MW in 18 months if Nepal government agreed to its proposal.

February 8th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh Monday lashed out at the Congress, saying if his party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav was charged with corruption 'so could Sonia Gandhi or even Manmohan Singh', signalling further strain in their already troubled alliance talks. Amar Singh said: 'Just because of a court case, does anyone become corrupt? I may also turn around and say that (Congress president) Sonia Gandhi is corrupt, and so is (Prime Minister) Manmohan Singh.' Singh was referring to a case of disproportionate assets pending in the Supreme Court against Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family members, which is to come up for hearing Tuesday.

February 4th, 2009 LUCKNOW - Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rehman Burke Thursday said Muslims would never pardon party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for his growing bonhomie with rebel Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kalyan Singh, who was Uttar Pradesh chief minister when the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya was razed in 1992. Burke, Lok Sabha member from Moradabad, said several other prominent Muslim leaders in the Samajwadi Party felt the same way.

January 2nd, 2009 KATHMANDU - Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, who heads the Samajwadi Party, and noted Indian industrialist Anil Ambani are arriving in Nepal Sunday on a private visit. Actress-activist Shabana Azmi is also headed for Kathmandu next week.

December 23rd, 2008 KATHMANDU - A small plane belonging to Nepal's national carrier, Nepal Airlines, met with an accident Wednesday at the Tribhuvan International Airport during a test flight.
