MP opposes creation of Bundelkhand Authority

August 15th, 2009 BHOPAL - A drought-like situation in Uttar Pradesh's Bundelkhand region has forced hundreds of villagers to migrate to other parts of country in search of their daily bread. The Bundelkhand region, which overlaps Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, has received scanty rainfall and poor irrigation facilities, and this has severely affected farmers.

August 2nd, 2009 BHOPAL - The union government's move to set up a central development authority for the Bundelkhand region has heated up politics in Madhya Pradesh, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress accusing each other of drawing political mileage from the issue. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has taken strong exception to the move and shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh alleging that it was an attempt to infringe upon the rights of the state.

August 1st, 2009 BHOPAL - Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh opposing the setting up of a separate Bundelkhand Development Authority by the central government, an official said Saturday. Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi has demanded such an authority be set up to spur development in the backward region that straddles Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

July 15th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured to extend full cooperation to the newly formed National Authority for Unique Identity (NAUI) in the compilation and classification of nationwide data of citizens for the proposed exclusive identification cards. This was disclosed by Petroleum Minister Murli Deora after Nandan Nilekani, Chairman of the NAUI called on him here on Tuesday.

June 25th, 2009 NEW DELHI J - The Union Cabinet has appointed the Infosys Chief Nandan Nilekani as the Chairman of National Authority for Unique Identity. Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni said the new authority will function under the planning commission, and Nilekani will be enjoying cabinet tatus.

February 25th, 2009 NEW DELHI - In a startling disclosure, a Parliamentary Standing Committee Tuesday said that Delhi is running far behind the schedule in preparing for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The committee, headed by CPI-M Rajya Sabha member Sitaram Yechury, said accommodation of a large number of guests during the Games would be a major problem as there are not enough hotels.

The government had last month notified the setting up of the project, Unique Identification Authority of India, which will give a unique number to every citizen.

January 21st, 2009 NEW DELHI - Job creation dipped 38 percent in three critical sectors in the quarter ended December 31, 2008, an industry lobby report released Thursday said. The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) said job creation in the financial services, IT and hospitality sectors dipped 38 percent between October-December 2008, compared to the previous quarter, and predicted the situation would continue to be 'bleak' in 2009.
