September 23rd, 2009 NEW DELHI - India's telecom regulator Wednesday issued guidelines on mobile number portability (MNP) that will allow subscribers to change operators while retaining the original number, but only within a particular circle. The new facility will become a reality from Dec 31 in metros and by March 20, 2010 in the rest of the country, said a statement from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

September 16th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Reliance Mobile, the GSM arm of telecom operator Reliance Communication (RCom), Wednesday said it would launch a new mobile number series beginning with the digit "8" in the Delhi-National Capital Region circle. Reliance will be the first telecom operator to shift from the practice of beginning a cell phone number with the digit "9".

Weighing 6,910 kg, TerreStar-1 is the largest commercial satellite ever and was launched by Arianespace from Kourou, French Guiana Tuesday.

June 28th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The next time you realise your mobile phone has run out of battery charge and you are commuting by the Delhi Metro, don't fret - just connect your phone to the charging points that will soon be available at stations for free. For the convenience of its commuters, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will install 134 multiple mobile charging machines at stations by July this year in a phased manner.

June 23rd, 2009 NEW DELHI - Taiwanese handset major HTC Corp, in collaboration with Bharti Airtel, Tuesday launched HTC Magic, India's first smartphone that will run on Google's Android operating system. The device is priced at Rs.29,900 and will be available in Airtel relationship centres and authorised HTC resellers in 17 cities.

June 11th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Tata Teleservices, one of the leading telecom players in the country, Wednesday launched mobile services on the GSM platform under the Tata DoCoMo brand. The company in which Japan's NTT DoCoMo has 26 percent stake, said it will invest $2 billion (Rs.9,450 crore) for the pan-India rollout of the services.

June 6th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Delhi Police Saturday announced it would be stepping up video surveillance in time for next year's Commonwealth Games by beaming real time footage from across the capital to "digital video walls" to be set up at the Police Headquarters here. The video footage from border points, Games' venues and traffic intersections will be accessed at the Central Command Unit, the construction of which is expected to be completed soon, Police Commissioner Y.S.

April 15th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Telecom service provider Virgin Mobile Wednesday launched an online cricket fantasy game, Indian Hatke League (IHL), with an aim to leverage the cricket mania during the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The online game will provide users the option to play for any of the eight teams participating in the 47-day IPL, to be held in South Africa April 18-May 24, while their scores on the basis of performance will determine their standings.
