Mixed response to shutdown called by ULFA in Assam

August 27th, 2009 NALBARI - Two United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Assam's Nalbari district on Thursday. According to official sources, a joint operation was launched by the army and the police at Jarpaluk village since last night where militants took shelter.

July 22nd, 2009 RANCHI - The shutdown call given by Maoists against rising prices of the essential commodities in Jharkhand evoked a mixed response here today. Mohammed Sahid, a train passenger said, "Maoists were justified in giving a shutdown call." July 7th, 2009 GUWAHATI - The outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) is planning to stage violent strikes in the run up to Independence Day, with a four-member hit squad sneaking into the state from bases in Myanmar, rebel leaders said Tuesday. We have information of at least four ULFA militants, including a senior leader, already entering Assam from Myanmar and planning to carry out attacks ahead of Aug 15, Prabal Neog, leader of the pro-talk ULFA faction, told IANS.

June 25th, 2009 GUWAHATI J - Security has been beefed up in Assam, in wake of the 12 hour "Asom bandh" called by the United liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) today. The banned ULFA has called for dawn-to-dusk bandh to protest against the alleged "fake encounter" by the security forces in which two of its cadres were killed on Sunday.

February 1st, 2009 GUWAHATI - Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Monday said there are about 300 cadres of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in 15 camps located in Bangladesh. January 28th, 2009 GUWAHATI - Two policemen and a separatist guerilla were killed and a six-year-old child injured in a gun battle between security forces and militants in Assam Thursday, officials said. A police spokesman said the gun battle took place between a group of militants belonging to the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and a joint team of the police and the army near village Sapekheti in Sibsagar district, about 390 km east of Assam's main city of Guwahati.
