SOUTH CAROLINA - South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford on Tuesday came up with an amusing statement when he anointed his Argentine mistress as his soul mate.
However, he did signify that he will try to fall back in love with his wife.
“This was a whole lot more than a simple affair, this was a love story. A forbidden one, a tragic one, but a love story at the end of the day,” the Daily News quoted Sanford, as saying.
Meanwhile, for his loyal wife, Jenny Sanford, he said he would be trying hard to rekindle their romance, but post the Maria Belen Chapur incident, he admitted it would be a difficult task.
“I will be able to die knowing that I had met my soul mate. But it was one of those things. I knew the cost,” he added.
The governor’s confession of being involved in various other relationships, seemed to push his governorship, and his marriage towards an end, as South Carolina’s Attorney General launched a probe to unravel Sanford’s past travels.
Sanford has rejected growing calls of resignation, and refused to provide details of his relationships with other women.
“What I would say is that I’ve never had sex with another woman. Have I done stupid? I have. You know you meet someone. You dance with them. You go to a place where you probably shouldn’t have gone,” said Sanford.
“If you’re a married guy, at the end of the day, you shouldn’t be dancing with somebody else. So, anyway, without wandering into that field, we’ll just say that I let my guard down in all senses of the word without ever crossing the line that I crossed with this situation,” he added.
Earlier, Sanford had revealed that he had spent much of his time with his Argentine mistress in New York. He described about five of his meetings with Chapur over the past year in New York, including two steamy multi-night stays- one in the city and one in The Hamptons. (ANI)
