Michigan cuts horse racing dates due to budget

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan is eliminating horse racing dates this summer because of the state’s budget problems.

Racing commissioner Christine White on Tuesday signed orders cutting 101 dates at thoroughbred and harness tracks.

Pinnacle Race Course in New Boston will lose 42 out of 82 days originally scheduled. Mount Pleasant Meadows will lose 18 of 37 days. Hazel Park will lose 38 days. Northville Downs will lose three days in the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30.

The racing commissioner previously announced layoffs following an executive order by Gov. Jennifer Granholm that was approved by lawmakers. The racing commissioner’s budget was cut by $1.4 million with five months left in the fiscal year.
