‘Idol’ contestant Matt Giraud back home in Mich.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Hundreds of people have turned out in Kalamazoo, Mich., to welcome home former “American Idol” contestant Matt Giraud (jir-AHD’) at a public party.

Giraud wasn’t able to perform at the event because of his “Idol” contract.

But his former band, Drop 35, and dueling piano singers from a restaurant where Giraud used to work did entertain the crowd.

The 23-year-old singer-pianist was voted off the popular Fox network singing competition last week. He finished in fifth place.

Several dozen fans greeted Giraud when he arrived Wednesday evening at the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport.

Giraud said he didn’t expect so many people to be waiting to greet him. He signed autographs and posed for pictures for about 30 minutes.
