Manmohan Singh leaves for Paris and 15th NAM summit

July 17th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh returned home Friday from a four-day trip to France and Egypt, the highlight of which was a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani and a joint statement from the two leaders that gets the two countries to begin talks again. Manmohan Singh's first stop was Paris where he attended the French National Day parade.

July 16th, 2009 Sharm-el-SHEIKH - French President Nicolas Sarkozy has assured Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that there is no ban on Sikhs wearing turbans in his country. Sarkozy's assurance came after Manmohan Singh handed over to him a 'non-official' memo two days ago in Paris, official sources said here Thursday.

July 15th, 2009 PARIS - Others may have wilted but not India's 77-year-old Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who valiantly stood next to French President Nicolas Sarkozy through much of the two-hour Bastille Day parade and then after it was over decided to abandon his carcade to walk to his hotel. After the rains of the previous week, Paris was warm as it celebrated its National Day Tuesday and many people lined up on either side of the Champs Elysees were seen looking for shade and a place to rest their legs.

July 13th, 2009 PARIS - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in Paris Monday night to attend the French National Day parade as chief guest, the first foreign leader to be accorded the honour. The honour reciprocates India's gesture of inviting French President Nicolas Sarkozy as chief guest for its Republic Day parade in January this year, said French envoy to India Jerome Bonnanfont.

July 12th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Two days after returning from the G8-G5 summit in Italy, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is leaving for France Monday on a 24-hour visit before flying to Egypt to attend the non-aligned summit where he will also meet with Pakistan's prime minister on the sidelines. In Paris, Manmohan Singh will be the guest of honour at the Bastille Day, officially celebrated as the French National Day on July 14.

In a message to his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on Republic Day, Gilani said: 'It is a matter of pleasure for me to convey, on my own behalf and on behalf of the government of Pakistan, our warm felicitation to you and to the government and people of India on the occasion of the Republic Day of India.' This is the second time Gilani has communicated with Manmohan Singh in a week.

January 25th, 2009 WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama has wished Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who underwent a successful heart surgery, 'a quick recovery'. Obama, in his message to mark India's Republic Day, said: 'I wish Prime Minister (Manmohan) Singh a quick recovery.' The prime minister underwent five bypass surgeries Saturday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.
