Lufthansa’s July passenger numbers up 12 pct

FRANKFURT — Deutsche Lufthansa AG said Tuesday that its group passenger numbers increased by 12 percent on the year in July, helped by small increases in demand in Europe and Asia and the consolidation of British carrier BMI.

Cologne-based Lufthansa said the group, which also includes Swiss International Airlines, transported 7.2 million passengers last month — up from 6.4 million a year earlier, a figure that was weighed down by strikes.

The inclusion of BMI, or British Midland Airways, added 757,000 passengers to the total figure, but the company said both Lufthansa and Swiss saw slight increases in passenger levels.

The Lufthansa brand alone, Germany’s biggest airline, saw demand rise 0.2 percent in Europe and 1 percent in the Asia-Pacific region, although it was down 2.1 percent in the Americas.

Lufthansa said the group’s passenger load factor, a measure of how full airplanes are, increased to 83.1 percent from 82.9 percent a year earlier. Excluding BMI, last month’s load factor would have been 83.4 percent.

Lufthansa Cargo saw a 4.8 percent annual decline in July freight and mail to nearly 149,000 U.S. tons (135,000 metric tons) as the global recession cut into trade.

Shares of Lufthansa were about 1 percent lower at euro10.60 ($15.05) in Frankfurt afternoon trading.
