Kerala to recruit 6,000 police constables

September 29th, 2009 COLOMBO - The Sri Lankan government will recruit Tamils in the police force, an official said Tuesday. There had been an overwhelming response from Tamils to join as constables in northern Jaffna, police spokesman Nimal Mediwaka told reporters.

September 16th, 2009 ALLAHABAD - Two police constables who allegedly shot at a truck driver after he refused to bribe them were sacked Wednesday in Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad district, officials said. The incident occurred in Naini locality around 4 p.m.

September 15th, 2009 LUCKNOW - As many as 42 policemen were suspended here Tuesday for dereliction of duty, officials said. According to an official spokesman, these included two inspectors, two senior sub-inspectors, four sub-inspectors, eight head constables, and 26 constables.

September 7th, 2009 AGRA - Family members of an Agra businessman Monday beat up two cops after a post-mortem proved their contention that he had been killed. Police, who had earlier termed it a case of accidental death, are now pressing charges against the attackers.

August 5th, 2009 LUCKNOW - Three police constables were arrested here Wednesday for helping a criminal to escape from police custody, officials said. Constables Jitendra Yadav, Brijesh Sharma and Devanand were missing for about a month from the Azamgarh district along with a criminal, Pintu Yadav, who was serving a sentence in the Azamgarh district jail.

August 2nd, 2009 GANDHINAGAR - To probe the alleged nexus between bootleggers and police, the Gujarat government has ordered scrutiny of the service records of the cops allegedly linked to the illicit liquor deaths in the state last month. The scrutiny is being carried out to know if these policemen were earlier posted in any other area in Gujarat where cases against bootleggers had been filed previously.

July 22nd, 2009 GHAZIABAD - Two police constables were assaulted by a dozen unidentified men and robbed of their rifles, motorcycle, mobile phones and other valuables, district police said Wednesday. The incident occurred late Tuesday night on the Duhai-Sadarpur Road under Muradnagar police station in Ghaziabad.

June 23rd, 2009 LUCKNOW - Three policemen in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district have been booked for allegedly molesting girls in a park, officials said Tuesday. The three constables - Kanhaiya Yadav, Valender Yadav and Vinod Upadhyay - Monday molested two girls in a park near a bus stand in the Gopiganj area of Bhadohi town.

June 11th, 2009 LUCKNOW - Four policemen in Uttar Pradesh's Basti district were suspended Wednesday for allegedly running a sex racket from their official quarters, an official said Wednesday. "An enquiry has also been initiated against the four constables, who were caught with two call girls Tuesday night at the police residential quarters," a district police spokesperson told IANS by phone.

June 4th, 2009 LUCKNOW - Two policemen booked for raping a 23-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district are on the run, police said Thursday. On the pretext of arranging a meeting with her husband lodged in the district jail, the two constables called up the victim.

Assistant sub-inspector Shiv Kumar Meena, 36, was on his way to the VIP security office at Vinay Marg Tuesday night when the accident took place.

January 1st, 2009 THIRUVANANTHAPURAM - Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Blakrishnan Friday said the police force has been directed to use computers extensively so that law and order issues can be tackled more efficiently. The decision to use computers at all police stations was taken at a meeting between Balakrishnan and the top brass of the state police.
