Kerala okays new 2,400 MW thermal power plant

October 7th, 2009 The ambitious 1000 MW power plant proposed to come up at Nabinagar in Bihar has run into rough weather as the state government has threatened not to supply water to this plant from Sone river. The project is the joint venture of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and the Indian Railways, completion of which will cost Rs 5352 crore.

October 7th, 2009 RAIPUR - Chhattisgarh police have interrogated several Chinese engineers employed by Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation (SEPCO) at Korba town to probe the Sep 23 collapse of an under-construction power plant chimney that killed 45 workers. "We have interrogated a few Chinese engineers of SEPCO since Monday regarding the Balco tragedy and have also collected some documents," Vivek Sharma, police station in charge of Balco Nagar in Korba, told IANS over phone.

September 13th, 2009 BHUBANESWAR - The state-owned National Aluminium Company (NALCO) is in talks with another public sector undertaking to set up a nuclear power plant in the country, an official said Sunday. The aluminium major is in talks with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) to set up the plant for which the exact location is yet not finalised.

August 12th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Engineering and construction major Larsen and Toubro (L&T) will supply and erect boiler and steam turbines for a 1,320-MW thermal power project that Jaiprakash Power is setting up in Madhya Pradesh. The two companies Wednesday signed an agreement in this regard.

July 18th, 2009 CHENNAI - Power plant equipment major Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) Saturday dispatched super-critical boiler columns, weighing a total of 100 tonnes, from its boiler plant in Tiruchirappalli to the NTPC-promoted Barh Thermal Project in Bihar. K. Ravikumar and R.S.Sharma, the CMDs of BHEL and NTPC respectively, flagged off the consignment at Tiruchirappalli, 300 km from here.

July 11th, 2009 RAIPUR - India's largest power producer NTPC, formerly National Thermal Power Corp, Sunday signed an agreement with the Chhattisgarh government for setting up a 4,000 MW coal-fired power plant on an investment of Rs.20,000 crore. Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who was present during signing of the pact, said the plant would be set up in the coal-rich Raigarh district.

June 24th, 2009 BANGALORE - Power and automation technology major ABB has bagged orders worth Rs.220 crore from Tata Projects to provide power solutions for a super-critical coal-fired power plant in Andhra Pradesh, the company said Wednesday. The 2x800 MW Krishnapatnam thermal power plant will deploy super-critical technology to ensure more efficient power generation and lower carbon dioxide emissions, ABB said in a regulatory statement.

May 29th, 2009 SHIMLA - Himachal Pradesh Friday entered into an agreement with Kolkata-based Eastern Mineral and Trading Agency (EMTA) for setting up a 500-MW thermal power plant in West Bengal, from where the electricity generated will be transmitted back home. The plant will be established at Raniganj.

May 14th, 2009 MUNDRA - The first unit of Mundra power plant in Gujarat is set to start by May 20. The Adani Power, an ancillary of the Adani Group, is ready to generate 330 MW out of 4620 MW capacity in Mundra power plant.

April 27th, 2009 ROPAR - Thousands of liters of oil drained into Sutlej River in Punjab after a pipe burst at one of a unit of a thermal plant. Coal furnace oil from the Ropar Thermal Plant has entered the international wetland and river Sutlej in the region of Ropar, after a pipe busted on Sunday.

March 30th, 2009 MUMBAI - Tata Power has commenced commercial operations of a 250 MW coal-based thermal unit at the Trombay Thermal Power Station, it said here Monday. With this, the Trombay plant's generation capacity will be increased to 1,600 MW from 1,350 MW, the company said in a regulatory statement.

February 9th, 2009 PANAJI - The Save Western Ghats (SWG) movement, comprising of environmentalists and nature-lovers from throughout the country, has decided to form an action plan to oppose the setting up of thermal power plants and a nuclear power-plant along the Konkan coast. The decision was taken following SWG's national consultative workshop attended by over 100 delegates from seven states.

January 13th, 2009 MUMBAI - State-owned engineering and manufacturing major Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has signed a deal with Karnataka to set up three thermal plants with a total capacity of 2,260 MW in the state. BHEL will set up a joint venture with Karnataka Power Corp for constructing a 660 MW thermal power plant at Edlapur in Raichur district of Karnataka, the company said in a regulatory statement.

December 23rd, 2008 BHOPAL - The Madhya Pradesh government Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Jaiprakash Associates Ltd for setting up a 660-MW thermal power plant at Nigori village in Singrauli district of the state. As per the agreement, the diversified industrial giant would form a joint venture with the state government for producing coal and then set up the thermal power plant.
