September 23rd, 2009 NAYAGARH - Micro financing by a voluntary organisation, 'Adhikar', is helping women weavers in Golabai village in Orissa's Nayagarh district to become self-reliant and weave their own destiny away from the clutches of moneylenders. Earlier, these women weavers had to take loans from the moneylenders to buy raw material, and they also used to work on a daily wage basis.

September 16th, 2009 RANCHI - A student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) committed suicide by hanging himself at his college hostel in Jharkhand, police said Wednesday. Satyendra Kumar Singh, first year MCA student of NIT in Jamshedpur, killed himself Tuesday.

September 4th, 2009 AMRITSAR - Socially and economically deprived women in Punjab's Amritsar district have found a saviour in Shree Lakshmi Narayan Stitching School, which has come ahead to help those women who are aspiring to become self-reliant. The school established by Shri Durgiana Temple Management Committee in 1992, imparts training in stitching and embroidery free of cost to women belonging to the weaker sections of the society.

August 14th, 2009 RANCHI - Lightning strikes have claimed lives of 10 people, including three women and two children, in various parts of Jharkhand, an official said here Friday. Lightning struck at two places of Dumka district Thursday night in which three women and a man were killed.

August 2nd, 2009 RANCHI - The Jharkhand Government has declared the entire State as drought-hit due to inadequate rainfall that it has received in the last two months. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Advisory Council of the Governor, which was chaired by G Krishnan, adviser to Governor K.

July 7th, 2009 RANCHI - Jharkhand Tuesday declared four of its 24 districts as drought hit, an official said. The four districts which have been declared as drought hit are Palamau, Chatra, Latehar and Garhwa.

May 21st, 2009 NEW DELHI - At least 36 inmates of a juvenile home in Delhi, who demanded homemade food be allowed there, ran away Thursday after a violent scuffle with those who opposed the demand, police said. The inmates fled the Balgrah (observation home) in Kingsway Camp in Mukherjee Nagar around 1.30 p.m.

May 1st, 2009 ABOHAR - A large number of women in Punjab are gaining self reliance with the help of self-help groups (SHGs) operating under the Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozagar Yojana (SGSY), a poverty eradication scheme launched by the Government of India to promote employment opportunities. In Muktsar district of southwest Punjab, women are getting vocational training in designing, embroidery, knitting and making of stuffed toys, thanks to the `Swaranjayanti Gram Swarazagar Yojana', a scheme under which assistance is given to the poor families living below the poverty line in rural areas.

May 1st, 2009 RANCHI - Six people, including three women and a child, died when the ambulance they were travelling in was hit by a truck in Jharkhand Friday, police said. The private ambulance was returning from Ranchi to Gumla when the truck hit it near the Pati roundabout in Gumla district, about 140 km from here, according to police.
