Jharkhand to get 61 new police stations

September 23rd, 2009 RANCHI - Three people died after they were hit by a train in Palamau district of Jharkhand early Wednesday morning, police said. According to police, the incident took place between Chiyachi and Ketaki railway stations in Palamau district, around 180 km from here, when the three were crossing the railway track.

September 4th, 2009 RANCHI - Maoist guerrillas Friday blew up two police pickets in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand. No one was injured, police said.

July 16th, 2009 RANCHI - A Maoist commander was arrested in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district Thursday, police said. Area commander of Jharkhand Prastuti Committee (JPC) Ramanji was arrested from Burkunda area of Ramgarh district, some 80 km from Ranchi, police said.

June 21st, 2009 RANCHI - Security has been beefed up in Jharkhand in view of the two-day strike called by the Maoist rebels in five states to protest "Lalgarh operation" being undertaken by security forces in West Bengal. "Security has been beefed up in the state, particularly in Maoist infested districts and in areas bordering West Bengal," a police official told IANS, adding security personnel are on high alert in bordering areas.

June 18th, 2009 RANCHI - Jharkhand has intensified police patrolling in areas bordering West Bengal following the killing of three Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) workers by Maoist rebels in the troubled Lalgarh region there, an official here said Thursday. Jharkhand police suspect that Maoist rebels may sneak into the state when paramilitary forces launch an operation against them in neighbouring Lalgarh.

June 1st, 2009 RANCHI - At least six trains were cancelled in Jharkhand Monday after the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) called a strike to protest against the killings of their leader Sudhakar Reddy and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran. The cancelled trains include Garib Rath that plies from Ranchi to New Delhi.

June 1st, 2009 RANCHI - Three people were injured while trying to fight robbers who looted cash and other valuables worth Rs.200,000 from train passengers in Jharkhand, police said Monday. Around 10 robbers raided a sleeper coach of a passenger train between Telo and Chandrapura railway stations Sunday night.

May 4th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Three Maoist rebels who were hiding in the national capital were arrested for their alleged involvement in 16 cases, police said Monday. Sleuths of Delhi Police special cell, anti-terrorism wing, nabbed the suspects identified as Yogender, 26, Satish, 20, and Sheetal Kumar, 20, from south Delhi's Badarpur area Sunday.

April 28th, 2009 RANCHI/NEW DELHI - At least 50 percent voters cast their ballot Tuesday in 116 polling stations of the Leftist insurgency-hit Jharkhand where re-polling was ordered following defective or damaged electronic voting machines during the first and second phases of the Lok Sabha elections. The voting ended peacefully at the polling booths spread in all the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies of the state, Deputy Election Commissioner J.P.

March 16th, 2009 RANCHI - Two Maoist rebels were killed after a two-hour-long shootout with police in Palamau district of Jharkhand Sunday, police said. Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided a hideout of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) near Barijharia village under Chainpur police station in Palamau district, 180 km from the state capital, and asked the rebels to surrender.

February 26th, 2009 KOLKATA - Four Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel were injured, one of them seriously, when suspected Maoists fired at them at a railway station in West Bengal's Purulia district, officials said Wednesday. State Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said the Maoists sprayed bullets when the RPF personnel were boarding the Subarnarekha Express at Barbhum railway station in Purulia, about 200 km from here.

February 14th, 2009 RANCHI - The Jharkhand police foiled a huge blast in Khuti district of the state, recovering 40 kg of improvised explosive device (IED) planted on a road, the police said Sunday. According to the police, a police team on a long-range patrol Saturday night, got a tip off that a 'landmine' had been planted on the road between Barnghada and Kurkud in Khuti district, around 70 km from Ranchi.

December 22nd, 2008 RANCHI - Suspected Maoist rebels shot dead five labourers in the Gumla district of Jharkhand, police said Tuesday. 'We suspect hand of Jharkhand Liberation Tigers (JLT) behind the killing,' Superintendent of Police Baljeet Singh told IANS by telephone.
