Jharkhand Mukti Morcha shuts down Orissa district

October 13th, 2009 BHUBANESWAR - Two security men accompanying former MP and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Orissa unit president Sudam Marandi were killed Tuesday when they were attacked by unidentified armed men in Orissa's Mayurbhanj district, police said. Marandi, though had a narrow escape.

July 2nd, 2009 NEW DELHI - The union cabinet Thursday decided to extend president's rule in Jharkhand for another six months beyond July 18. The decision was taken on the basis of Governor Syed Sibtey Razi's report dated June 16, according to which Jharkhand continues to be in a state of political impasse and no party was willing to form the government, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters after the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

May 30th, 2009 RANCHI - Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief and former chief minister Shibu Soren resigned from the state assembly Saturday, an official of the assembly secretariat said. Soren's resignation was submitted by JMM general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya on his behalf, as the JMM supremo was in his ancestral village in Ramgharh district, performing last rituals of his son Durga Soren, who died of a brain haemorrhage May 20.

May 16th, 2009 RANCHI - Kamsheshwar Baitha, jailed Maoist leader and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate for state's Palamau parliamentary constituency, won by a margin of over 21,000 votes. Baitha, who has been in jail for the last four years, defeated rival Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) sitting Member of Parliament Ghuran Ram.

May 16th, 2009 RANCHI - The early trends of the Lok Sabha vote count Saturday indicated that the BJP was gaining in Jharkhand while JMM and Congress were losing in the state. Of the 14 seats, the trends were available for nine.

March 26th, 2009 RANCHI - The Congress and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) have agreed to a seat sharing deal in all but two Lok Sabha seats in Jharkhand and have decided to go for a 'friendly fight' in these seats, leaders of the two parties said here Thursday. 'We have evolved a consensus on 12 Lok Sabha seats of the state.

March 25th, 2009 BHUBANESWAR - The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Wednesday said it will field candidates from one Lok Sabha and 10 assembly constituencies in Orissa after seat-sharing talks with the state's ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) apparently failed. NCP state president Prasanta Nanda, however, said their list of candidates has the BJD's consent, even as party denied the claim.

March 22nd, 2009 BHUBANESWAR - Archana Nayak, the only woman MP in Orissa's ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Saturday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Nayak, who has organised and led many women's movements in Orissa against dowry, violence against women and other such issues, said she quit the BJD as it would be unable to fight the Congress in the assembly and parliamentary polls after splitting with the BJP.

March 20th, 2009 RANCHI - The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) said Friday it hoped to form a government in the state under Shibu Soren if the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) wins the Lok Sabha polls. Mathura Prasad Mahto, chief whip of JMM, told reporters that if the UPA won the April-May general election, the cabinet will revoke the suspension of the Jharkhand assembly.

March 11th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday asked Orissa Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik to tell people why the church complimented him for breaking their alliance in the state. Orissa's top Christian leader, Archbishop Raphael Cheenath, Monday said the church was very happy over the BJD's decision to part ways with the BJP.

January 9th, 2009 RANCHI - Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren, who lost an assembly by-election earlier this week, said Saturday he would resign 'in a day or two'. Before attending the central committee meeting of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Soren told reporters: 'I will resign from the post of chief minister in a day or two after ensuring the formation of an alternative government'.

January 7th, 2009 RANCHI - Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Shibu Soren Thursday lost a key assembly by-election he needed to win to remain in his post, officials said. Soren lost from Tamar constituency by about 9,000 votes to Raja Peter of the Jharkhand Party, a member of the ruling alliance led by the JMM, Election Commission officials said.
