NEW DELHI - Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy Monday asked the finance ministry to remove excise tax on public buses and said the government will introduce 15,220 new buses in 61 cities this year.

“Road transport is very important and in the last budget we proposed to cut the excise duty from 16 percent to 8 percent. To devote more buses for public transport, we are making efforts with the ministry of finance to exempt public buses completely from excise duty,” Reddy told reporters.

He was speaking after releasing the the 100-day agenda of the urban development ministry.

Reddy has also proposed to waive local taxes on buses made for public transport.

He added that steps were already taken to buy 15,220 modern buses.

“All these buses will be operational by December 2009. The process of tender for purchase is almost complete,” the minister said.

These would be low-floor or semi low-floor buses of which more than 20 percent would be air conditioned with electronic ticketing facility.

Reddy also announced a special helpline number, 155220, for passengers. Anybody can call the helpline number for transport related information.
