Jailed Maoist leader wins in Jharkhand

September 29th, 2009 RANCHI - Five Maoist rebels, including two top leaders, have been arrested from two districts in Jharkhand, police said Tuesday. Four Maoist rebels were arrested Monday night from the Semara jungle, which falls under Palkot police station of Gumla district, around 145 km from here.

September 28th, 2009 RANCHI - Four guerrillas were killed by members of another Maoist group in Gumla district of Jharkhand Monday, police said. A gun battle between two groups of Maoist rebels took place at Salkaya jungle of Gumla, about 160 km from here.

August 12th, 2009 RANCHI - Two cops were shot dead by Maoist rebels in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand, police said Wednesday. According to the police, the cops from Dhanbad district, which is around 260 km from Ranchi, went to the local market Tuesday night.

August 3rd, 2009 RANCHI - A Maoist leader wanted in over a dozen criminal cases was arrested in Jharkhand's Latehar district Monday, police said. Praduman Sharma alias Kundanji alias Sudhansu Sharma, member of Bihar regional committee of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was arrested Monday at Tori railway station of Lathear district, some 160 km from Ranchi.

July 16th, 2009 RANCHI - A Maoist commander was arrested in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district Thursday, police said. Area commander of Jharkhand Prastuti Committee (JPC) Ramanji was arrested from Burkunda area of Ramgarh district, some 80 km from Ranchi, police said.

July 5th, 2009 RANCHI - A Maoist rebel was killed in gun battle with security forces in Dumka district of Jharkhand on early Sunday morning, police said. According to police, around 8 to 10 Maoist rebels were holding a meeting near Orjha village of Dumka district, which is around 400 km from Ranchi.

June 29th, 2009 RANCHI - Eleven Maoist guerrillas were arrested Monday from a Jharkhand village for distriibuting pamphlets. The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) guerrillas were arrested from Cheliyama village in Seraikela and Kharsawa district, about 170 km from the state capital Ranchi.

June 1st, 2009 RANCHI - At least six trains were cancelled in Jharkhand Monday after the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) called a strike to protest against the killings of their leader Sudhakar Reddy and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran. The cancelled trains include Garib Rath that plies from Ranchi to New Delhi.

April 16th, 2009 RANCHI - Maoist rebels in Jharkhand have called in insurgents from other states to enforce their poll boycott call and carry out violent attacks during the elections, an official said Thursday. 'Maoists from outside the state have been called in the state to create violence,' Sarvendu Tathagat, the deputy commissioner of Latehar district, told IANS over phone.

February 9th, 2009 RANCHI - Maoist rebels Monday night blew up the ancestral house of an assistant jailer in the state's Chatra district, charging him with torturing jailed rebels, police Tuesday said. According to police, more than 100 rebels of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) Monday night came to the house of Chandrashekhar Dagi in Lembugua village of Chatra district, around 190 km from Ranchi.

February 8th, 2009 RANCHI - Jharkhand police have launched a poster campaign to take on the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) that has called for a 24-hour shutdown in the state. CPI-Maoist called for the shutdown Monday in Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal.

February 3rd, 2009 RANCHI - A top Maoist rebel, who escaped from an Andhra Pradesh jail in 1988, was arrested Wednesday in Jharkhand's Bokaro district, the police said. Mohammad Hussain, who operated under different names like Shankar Ramakant and Sagar, was caught by the police in Bokaro on a tip-off, but officials declined to reveal the exact location of his arrest.

February 1st, 2009 RANCHI - Maoist rebels blew up a tower for mobile telephony in Chatra district of Jharkhand, a police officer said Monday. More than 50 rebels belonging to Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) blew up the transmission tower of Airtel situated in Garo village of Chatra district, around 190 km from here, Sunday midnight.
