Top Italian Mafia fugitive arrested in Caracas

ROME — Authorities arrested one of Italy’s most dangerous Mafia fugitives as he left his apartment in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas, Italian police said Sunday.

Salvatore Miceli, suspected of being a key intermediary in the drug trafficking trade, had been under surveillance by Italian and Venezuelan police for three days before he was nabbed late Saturday, Carabinieri from the Sicilian city of Trapani said in a statement.

Police also picked up two other Italian suspects, the statement said, without giving details.

Micheli is listed as one of Italy’s 30 most dangerous Mafia fugitives, wanted for a series of drug trafficking charges.

He had been on the run since 2001, and is suspected of being an intermediary in the drug trade between the Colombian drug lords and the Italian Cosa Nostra and ‘ndrangheta, another organized crime group based in southern Italy’s Calabria region, the statement said.

“The investigation has essentially confirmed Micheli’s primary role in the drug trafficking sector and his ability to build a close network of relations with various transnational organized crime groups,” the statement said.

Italy’s Interior Minister Roberto Maroni congratulated the Carabinieri for the “important operation.”
