Police: Bomb kills 4 Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad

BAGHDAD — Iraqi police and medical officials say a roadside bomb in Baghdad has killed four Shiite pilgrims on their way back from the southern holy city of Karbala.

A police official says the bomb exploded at about 9:10 a.m. Friday as a minibus carrying the pilgrims entered the Shiite district of Sadr City.

Another police official says eight others were wounded. A medical official confirmed the casualties.

All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

Insurgents have routinely targeted pilgrims.

Hundreds of thousands of Shiites made the pilgrimage to Karbala this week to mark the birth of a Shiite saint who disappeared in the ninth century.
