India to coordinate climate research

October 13th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change met here Tuesday to discuss the setting up of a network of institutions for mutual exchange of knowledge on climate change, a member of the council said. Called "strategic knowledge on climate change", the "networked institutional framework" would help coordinate all research work on the topic going on in universities and other institutions, including modelling the outcome of various scenarios in a warmer world and putting together a database, said the member, speaking on condition of anonymity.

October 3rd, 2009 WASHINGTON - India has proposed annual bilateral dialogues with the United States and the European Union to exchange notes on the issue of climate change, Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh has said. The proposed dialogue with the Europeans and the Americans could be on the lines of the first India-China energy dialogue scheduled to take place in New Delhi Oct 21, he said at a press conference here Friday at the end of his US visit.

September 10th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen who is on a three day visit to India from Thursday, will make an effort to speed up negotiations on climate deal ahead of a key summit in Copenhagen in December. Rasmussen's will have discussion with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Rajendra Pachauri.

September 6th, 2009 KOLKATA - At least 220 Indian scientists and 127 research organisations are joining hands for a massive study to monitor climate change in different parts of the country. Climate change in India has led to a rise in sea levels while storm surges in coastal areas have also become a major concern for environmental authorities.

According to Ministry of Environment and Forests officials, 127 research organisations and 220 scientists are being involved in extensive research activity on the issue.

September 2nd, 2009 NEW DELHI - India's per capita green house gas (GHG) emission, the main cause of global warming, continues to be less than the global average and even in 2031 it will be below the world average of 2005, the environment and forest ministry asserted Wednesday. As per the estimates of the five different studies, Indias per capita GHG emissions in 2030-31 would be between 2.77 tonnes and five tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).

July 27th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Minister of State for Earth Sciences Prithviraj Chavan Monday said India's per capita energy consumption was "the lowest" in the world and the nation "can defend its interests". Chavan, addressing a gathering on Earth Sciences Foundation Day at Vigyan Bhavan in the capital, said climate change has now come into international diplomatic domain and India needed to carry out reserach and study to put its stance at the international level.

July 21st, 2009 NEW DELHI - Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday said India and United States have decided to work in close tandem in the field of climate change. Abdullah, who met Todd Stern, US Special Envoy for Climate Change here to bridge differences between the two countries on reducing greenhouse gases, favoured transfer of technology to reduce emissions.

July 6th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The government will raise the the allocation for cleaning India's rivers and lakes to Rs.562 crore ($110 million) in fiscal 2009-10 from Rs.335 crore last fiscal, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announced Monday while presenting the union budget in parliament. Mentioning that the government had unveiled its National Action Plan on Climate Change last year and that eight national missions under it were being finalised, Mukherjee committed that the government would provide "necessary funds" for all the missions.

May 14th, 2009 NEW DELHI - There should be high level talks between Brazil, Russia, India and China on a global pact to combat climate change before the first BRIC summit in Russia next month, India's top climate negotiator Shyam Saran said here Thursday. The talks should be at the level of either politicians or senior officials, Prime Minister's Special Envoy on Climate Change Saran told delegates from all BRIC countries at a summit preparatory meeting organised by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).
