India to ask China about Brahmaputra dam report

October 14th, 2009 NEW DELHI - A day after China protested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Arunachal Pradesh, India Wednesday criticised China for deciding to help Islamabad set up projects in the Pakistani part of Jammu and Kashmir which New Delhi claims as its own. We hope that the Chinese side will take a long term view of the India-China relations, and cease such activities in areas illegally occupied by Pakistan, external affairs ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said.

October 14th, 2009 NEW DELHI - India could face trouble on both the Pakistani and Chinese borders at the same time but it is not in a position to defend even one, former national security advisor Brajesh Mishra said Wednesday. "We are now facing the possibility of having two fronts being active simultaneously, both Pakistan and China, and this has never been the case before," Mishra told BBC Hindi service in an interview.

October 1st, 2009 NEW DELHI - Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat has accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the US arms lobby of creating complications in India-China relations. September 24th, 2009 NEW DELHI - India Thursday said it will hold the third joint military exercise with China next year and clarified that no such drill was planned for this year. "It was mutually decided during the last exercise that the next joint military exercise would be held in 2010, external affairs ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said.

August 12th, 2009 LONDON - Nepal's former prime minister Pushpa Kumar Dahal Prachanda claims India thought he was closer to Communist China than to India, but says it was wrong to think so. Prachanda, who resigned as prime minister in May after less nine than months in office, said he wanted good relations with both of Nepal's giant neighbours - India and China.

July 29th, 2009 NEW DELHI - External Affairs Minister S. M.Krishna on Wednesday informed the Lok Sabha that China has proposed for the establishment of a hotline between the Chinese Premier and the Prime Minister of India to maintain regular contacts at the highest level.

July 24th, 2009 DHAKA - China has expressed support for talks between Dhaka and New Delhi over the proposed construction of Tipaimukh dam in India's Manipur state. The Barak river, on which the dam is to be built, flows from China into India and then goes to Bangladesh.

July 20th, 2009 DHAKA - Bangladesh has said that if the parliamentary team visiting the site of an Indian dam finds it "harmful", it would demand a meeting of the Joint Rivers Commission (JRC), to be attended by the prime ministers of the two countries. JRC is the official forum at which the two countries discuss issues relating to rivers.

July 9th, 2009 NEW DELHI - External Affairs Minister S.M.Krishna today disclosed in the Rajya Sabha that China had objected to funding by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to an irrigation project in Arunachal Pradesh, which is a clear violation of the ADB charter. During Question Hour, Krishna said India had made it clear to all member nations of the ADB, that political considerations couldn't be cited for prohibiting the bank from evaluating any project, and all member countries of the ADB board except China supported India's plan.

July 9th, 2009 NEW DELHI - India Thursday said the rapid enhancement in the defence capabilities of China as well as its hobnobbing with Pakistan and other countries in South Asia have military implications for India. Releasing its annual defence report, India said that it was carefully monitoring China's defence modernisation.

June 20th, 2009 DHAKA - Bangladesh has expressed confidence that India would do "nothing harmful" on a proposed river dam in Manipur state in north-eastern India, a minister has said. Dhaka would do "everything possible if the dam proves to be a threat to Bangladesh's environment", Foreign Minister Dipu Moni told reporters Friday.
