Bush says businesses will lead economic comeback

ERIE, Pa. — Former President George W. Bush says businesses will be at the leading edge of helping to lift the United States out of the recession.

Speaking to a manufacturers association dinner Wednesday night in northwestern Pennsylvania, Bush said government can serve as a stabilizing force during the financial crisis, but it’s the private sector that will be at the forefront in turning around the economy.

He also said that lower regulations, a crackdown on frivolous lawsuits and an expansion of export markets can help the manufacturing sector.

Bush has said he will not criticize his successor, President Barack Obama.

He did touch on Obama’s plans to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Bush says he hopes those plans won’t compromise U.S. security.
