Mistrial in case of Texas mayor’s $26K deposit

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — A mistrial has been declared in the case of a Texas mayor who says he accidentally deposited a $26,000 city check intended for a vendor into a personal account.

Jurors failed to reach a unanimous decision Thursday on theft and two other charges facing Brownsville Mayor Pat Ahumada.

Ahumada says the trial was “surreal” and he’s done nothing wrong.

Ahumada initially denied depositing the check, suggesting political enemies were setting him up. When bank surveillance videos showed otherwise, he said he didn’t remember making the deposit.

No prosecution witnesses could explain how the check made it from the city’s finance department into Ahumada’s hands, leaving open the possibility it was the accident Ahumada claimed.

A judge set a new trial for Jan. 19.
