September 19th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Over 24,000 people have asked big manufacturers of processed foods in India, including Nestle, Britannia and Hindustan Unilever, not to use genetically modified (GM) foods after Greenpeace put up a list of companies that could be using GM products. The NGO put up a list on the internet 11 days ago mentioning firms that did or did not say they used such foods.

September 17th, 2009 KOLKATA - Australian dairy brands, Bega cheese and Pauls Zymil easy to digest milk, were launched in Kolkata Thursday and would soon be available in other Indian cities as well, an official said. "The brands will be initially available in eastern and northeastern India, followed by launches in northern, southern and western India," Debraj Sanyal, director iMBiz Pvt Ltd, told reporters at a press meet.

September 9th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Exports of agricultural products from India will more than double to top Rs.1 lakh crore (Rs.1 trillion or $20 billion) in the next five years, says an official export promotion agency of the commerce ministry. According to estimates by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda), the share of India's farm product exports in the global trade will also grow from 2 percent now to over 5 percent.

June 17th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The ban on milk and milk product imports from China, which was to have expired June 24, has been extended by another six months, the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has said. "The central government hereby extends the prohibition on import of milk and milk products, including chocolates and chocolate products..., for a period of six months from 24 June, 2009, and until further orders," said a DGFT notification.

May 26th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Bharti group, promoted by the Delhi-based Mittal family, has ventured into food and beverage products in partnership with the Singapore-based Del Monte Pacific at an initial investment of Rs.1 billion ($20 million/Rs.100 crore). Group company Bharti Enterprises Tuesday launched a range of food and beverage products that includes fruit drinks, packaged fruits, ketchup and sauces, apart from several Italian products for the Indian market.
