Haryana legislator resigns from BJP

October 7th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday said the controversial issue of sharing of water between Haryana and Punjab should be sorted out through talks. The water sharing has been a thorny issue between both states with Haryana seeking completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal and Punjab opposing the move.

August 31st, 2009 NEW DELHI - Assembly polls in the three Congress-ruled states of Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh will be held simultaneously Oct 13, the Election Commission announced Monday. The counting of votes will take place nine days later, Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla told reporters here.

August 27th, 2009 HARYANA - The Haryana Police has released two kids-Nikita and Himanshu - after their grandparents promised to prevent them from protesting. The eight-year-old Nikita and seven-year-old Himanshu were staging a dharna outside the Haryana Court demanding arrest of the rapists of their mother.

August 21st, 2009 CHANDIGARH - Haryana Governor Jagannath Pahadia dissolved the state assembly on the recommendation of the State Cabinet on Friday evening. Earlier in the day Haryana Cabinet recommended the Governor to dissolve the State Assembly.

August 16th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - Cabinet minister in Haryana, Kartar Devi, died Sunday after a prolonged illness. She was 66. Devi was admitted to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here since July following multiple complications, including acute asthma, state government officials said.

August 14th, 2009 AMRITSAR - While members from Haryana staged a walkout, the general house meeting of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Friday vowed to oppose the Haryana government move to form a separate committee to manage gurdwaras (Sikh shrines) in that state. The SGPC general house "unanimously" decided to fight the Haryana government move to announce a separate SGPC for Haryana by Nov 1.

August 12th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - In the wake of a poor monsoon in Haryana, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Wednesday urged the central government to allocate 400 MW additional power from the unallocated pool of central generation. In response to our earlier request, the central government had allocated only 100 MW of additional power for Haryana.

July 13th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - In a war of words over water, Haryana Monday accused Delhi of being "wasteful" and "extravagant" in using water. It also accused Delhi of delaying - apparently "deliberately" - acquisition of land and its hand-over to Haryana for making a 600-metre carrier-lined channel that would meet the capital's water shortage.

June 21st, 2009 SHIMLA - Investigations are still on against former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala and his family in a case of disproportionate assets, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Ashwani Kumar said Sunday. "Investigations into the amassing of assets beyond their known sources of income are still on against Om Prakash Chautala and his family members," Ashwani Kumar told IANS here.

June 7th, 2009 PANCHKULA - Haryana police on Saturday seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition and arrested three persons in Panchkula. Most of the weapons were stolen from a gun depot in Hoshiarpur, Punjab.

May 5th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The turnout was dismal at the Congress rally in Haryana Monday, so low that Haryana police had to intervene to ensure that the crowd stayed put during Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's address. After all the Congress leaders had addressed the meeting in Faridabad, it was finally Hooda's turn.

April 13th, 2009 BHOPAL - A Congress party legislator was shot at by unidentified assailants in Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh Monday evening, police said. Makhan Singh Jatav is a legislator from Gohad assembly constituency in the state.

March 17th, 2009 AHMEDABAD - Miffed over not being given a ticket for the parliamentary polls, a Congress legislator in Gujarat resigned from the party Monday and sought to join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Sami Haji legislator Bhavsinh Rathod wanted to contest the Patan Lok Sabha seat in North Gujarat but he was not considered by the party leadership.

February 12th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - The search giant Google has been approached by the Chandigarh police after apparently morphed pornographic photographs of leading Haryana politicians were posted on the internet. The olice have asked Google to trace the source of the pornographic photographs, believed to be morphed, following a complaint from Haryana Congress secretary Mahinder Singh.

January 27th, 2009 CHANDIGARH -Former Haryana deputy chief minister Chander Mohan's (now Chand Mohammed) second wife Wednesday claimed that her husband has been 'kidnapped'. Fiza, a city lawyer who was Anuradha Bali before she and Chander Mohan converted to Islam to get married, told reporters here that her husband was missing since Wednesday morning.
