The water sharing has been a thorny issue between both states with Haryana seeking completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal and Punjab opposing the move.

February 17th, 2009 NEW DELHI - At least 58 bonded labourers along with 123 members of their families have been rescued from brick kilns in Haryana after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) carried out spot investigations in the state since the beginning of this month. The labourers, who were all rescued from different places in the Jhajjar district of the state, were later released by the executive magistrate and assured of being rehabilitated.

February 1st, 2009 NEW DELHI - Two years after she was allegedly sexually abused by her headmaster in school, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken up the case of a class 8 student in Haryana by ordering an enquiry and recommending compensation to the victim. The commission received a complaint by Sube Singh, the victim's grandfather, alleging that three days after the incident happened, the police lodged an FIR Feb 14 2007 against the headmaster of the school, Samay Singh, for sexually abusing the victim.
