guru_nanakThe birth anniversaries of Sikh Guru’s are known as Gurpurabs (festivals). People across the country today are observing Gurparab, the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. The birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is also called Guru Nanak Jayanti and is celebrated with devotion and dedication.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is one of the most sacred festivals in Sikhism. On this holy day sweets and langar or community lunches are offered to everyone irrespective of religious faith. Men, women, and children, participate in this karseva as service to the community, cook food and distribute it in the ‘Guru ka Langar’, with the traditional ‘Karah Prasad’.

On the occasion of Gurparab, all the gurdwaras have been cleaned up and decorated with light. Various Gurudwara committees took out the early morning processions known as Prabhat Pheri. The celebrations also include the three-day Akhand path, during which the holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib is read continuously, from beginning to end without a break. On the day of the festival, the Granth Sahib is also carried in a procession on a float, decorated with flowers, throughout a village or city.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. Guru Nanak Sahib (the First Nanak, the founder of Sikhism) was born on 15th April, 1469 at Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi in the present distrect of Shekhupura (Pakistan), now Nanakana Sahib. The Birthday of Guru Nanak Sahib is celebrated on 15th Kartik Puranmashi i.e. full moon day of the month Kartik. Sikhs believe that all subsequent Gurus possessed Guru Nanak’s divinity and religious authority.
