Lufthansa seeks Austrian merger deadline extension

FRANKFURT — German airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG said Tuesday it has applied for a month-long extension to the deadline to merge with Austrian Airlines in order to fulfill certain obligations for the deal.

In a brief statement, the Cologne-based airline said it had applied to the Austrian Takeover Commission for the extension — to Aug. 31 from July 31 — because it needs more time to reach an agreement with European Commission authorities.

The Vienna-based commission said it would make a decision this week.

The European Commission confirmed Tuesday that Lufthansa offered new concessions in its bid for Austrian to try and soothe EU antitrust concerns that the deal could reduce choice and hike fares on some routes.

EU spokeswoman Maria Assimakopoulou said she could not give any details on what Lufthansa was promising to change.

Lufthansa has the right to pull out of the deal by July 31 if it does not receive EU approval for the takeover — which is now unlikely.

Assimakopoulou said that date was set by Lufthansa itself and “doesn’t concern the Commission” which must rule on blocking or clearing the bid by Nov. 6.

Shares of Lufthansa fell 1.1 percent to close at euro9.43 ($13.35) in Frankfurt.
