Lufthansa 2Q net pft falls 88 pct to €40 million

FRANKFURT — Airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG said Thursday its second quarter profit fell 88 percent on a slump in sales — especially of lucrative first- and business-class seats — due to the global recession.

The Cologne-based airline, Europe’s largest by sales, earned €40 million ($56 million) in the April-June period compared with €337 million a year ago.

Lufthansa said revenue fell nearly 20 percent to €5.2 billion from €6.5 billion last year.

The company’s pretax profit fell nearly to 99 percent to €7 million from €470 million.

Sharesrose 1.6 percent to €9.60 in Frankfurt.

Lufthansa said its profits were especially affected by a decline in premium traffic but that other business units like cargo and catering also felt the pinch from the economic crisis.

“In the first half-year, Lufthansa was able to avoid the worst storms, but in the current environment the (airline) is also exposed to turbulence, sometimes severe,” the company said.

Its passenger airlines group, which includes Swiss International Airlines and British Midland, posted an 80 percent decline in operating profit to €65 million from €326 million in the year-ago quarter.

Lufthansa said during the first six months of the year, passenger numbers were down in all regions except for in the Middle East and Africa. The America region alone recorded a 9 percent decline in the number of people that flew with the company.

The cargo division reported an operating loss for the quarter of €62 million compared with a €68 million profit a year ago.

Lufthansa said that the “market environment for passenger traffic remains difficult and there are still no signs of a recovery,” and “the economic crisis continues to have a drastic effect on the results of the air freight industry.”

However, the company’s aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul division saw operating profits increase 11 percent. It was the only division that saw an increase in sales for the quarter.

For the first half of the year, Lufthansa reported a loss of €216 million compared with a profit €381 million in the first six months of 2008. The first quarter is usually the least profitable for airlines. Sales fell 15 percent to €10.2 billion from €12.1 billion.
