GM drops Mont. mine in favor of foreign metals

BILLINGS, Mont. — A federal bankruptcy judge has granted General Motors’ request to drop its precious metals contract with a Montana mining company so it can use foreign suppliers instead.

Stillwater Mining Co. attorney Garry Graber says the cancellation was approved Wednesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York.

For the last decade, Stillwater has supplied palladium and rhodium for use in catalytic converters that filter pollution from vehicle exhaust. But as GM emerges from federal bankruptcy protection, the Detroit automaker says it can no longer afford to keep Stillwater as a supplier.

General Motors Co. is keeping two precious metals suppliers from Russia and South Africa.

In court filings, Stillwater argued GM was compelled to honor the contract as the recipient of up to $50 billion in government loans.
