Geithner plans trips to Europe and Middle East

WASHINGTON — Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will travel to the Middle East and Europe next month for a series of meetings to discuss global economic issues.

The Treasury Department said Tuesday that Geithner will meet with officials in Britain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and France to discuss the global economic downturn and financial crisis before a leaders’ summit of the Group of 20 nations in September in Pittsburgh. The G-20 is composed of the world’s richest countries and major emerging economies.

The trip, which will be Geithner’s first to the Middle East since he became Treasury secretary, will take place July 12-16.

Geithner traveled to China earlier this month to reassure the Chinese — the largest holders of U.S. government debt — that despite record deficits, the Obama administration was serious about restoring fiscal discipline once the current economic crisis is resolved.
