France asks for report into air traffic control

PARIS — France’s transport minister asked civil aviation authorities Wednesday to look into a report of widespread absenteeism among the country’s air traffic controllers.

Le Figaro newspaper reported that France’s air traffic controllers have secretly devised an informal, illegal system among themselves to work fewer hours than they are paid for working. Citing unnamed sources, the daily said controllers have to cover for colleagues who stayed home that day, creating stressful situations that may put airport takeoffs and landings at risk.

Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau asked that a report on Le Figaro’s story be drawn up within 24 hours. He also asked civil aviation chief Patrick Gandil, who will deliver the report, to ensure that “security is an absolute priority for air transport.”

Jean-Paul Armangau of the USAC-CGT civil aviation union said Le Figaro’s report was full of lies.

“To say that controllers are not at their radar screens and are creating delays or unsafe conditions is practically defamation,” he told RTL radio.
