Farmers’s debt relief scheme extended

October 14th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - The Punjab government Wednesday decided to extend till Dec 31 this year the one-time settlement (OTS) scheme, launched to provide relief to sick industrial units. "This decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here today (Wednesday)," said an official spokesperson of the state government.

August 18th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The government Tuesday ruled out any fresh debt waver scheme even though farmers have been severly hit by poor monsoon this year. "There is no such proposal," Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said when asked whether the government would write off farmers' loans.

June 26th, 2009 MUMBAI - The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Friday advised public sector banks to write off farmers' loans even if they failed to fully pay the stipulated 75 percent of the total loan amount. Under the debt relief scheme, launched in the 2008-09 budget, banks were allowed to write off up to 25 percent of farmers' loans if they pay 75 percent of their debt.

February 15th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Claiming that the United Progressive Alliance government has given 'focussed attention' to farmers, Minister for External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee Monday said the plan outlay for the agriculture sector was hiked 300 percent between 2003-04 and 2008-09. Presenting the interim budget for 2009-10 in parliament, Mukherjee said the agriculture credit disbursement has also gone up to Rs.2.5 trillion (Rs.250,000 crore) last fiscal from Rs.870 billion in 2003-04.
