Fall garden tours offered in Newport, Charleston
NEWPORT, R.I. — Fall tours of private gardens and homes are being offered in Newport, R.I., and Charleston, S.C.
The self-guided tour of private gardens in Newport, called the Secret Garden Tour, will be offered Sept. 11-13, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Some of the Newport gardens are within walking distance of one another; a few have parking. In past years, as many as 10 gardens have been open for the tour.
Tickets bought in advance online from www.secretgardentours.org are $20, while tickets purchased the day of the tour are $25. Advance tickets should be turned in at Kingscote Mansion, 253 Bellevue Ave., where day-of tickets can be bought as well and maps will be provided. A ticket can be used any or all of the three days. Tickets can also be purchased at the Newport Visitors’ Center, 23 America’s Cup Ave. Children are free. Proceeds benefit local public schools.
In Charleston, the annual Fall Tours of Homes and Gardens are held over five weekends, between Sept. 24 and Oct. 25. The tours offer visits to gardens and architecturally significant homes, churches and other properties, most of which are privately owned and open to the public for this event through the Preservation Society of Charleston, which sponsors the tours.
Tickets are $45 a person for each individual tour, with a weekend rate of $120 a person for tours on three evenings the same weekend. Each weekend highlights a different neighborhood, including Charlotte Street, Legare Street, Upper South Battery, Queens Street, King Street, Broad Street, Meeting Street and more.
