Ensign says he complied with ethics rules and laws

WASHINGTON — Embattled Republican Sen. John Ensign says he did nothing wrong and will cooperate with any probes into his affair with an employee and his alleged efforts to cover it up.

The Nevada Republican told CNN in a brief hallway interview that he complied with all ethics rules and laws when he recommended his former chief of staff, Doug Hampton, for lobbying jobs. Hampton is married to Ensign’s former mistress, campaign worker Cynthia Hampton.

Asked whether he intends to resign, Ensign said he is focused on his work and headed to the Senate for a vote. He did not deny a New York Times report last week that said the senator met with two companies Hampton represented during a period when Hampton was banned by law from lobbying his former boss. Ensign told CNN that he never met with Hampton about any of that.
