NYC: Enjoy the great outdoors, metropolis style
NEW YORK — If you’re in New York this summer, the city has opened a few new public spaces where you can take a break from museums, shows and shopping, and enjoy the great outdoors, metropolis-style. Best of all, these attractions are free.
On the West Side of Manhattan, check out the High Line, an elevated steel railway built in the 1930s that last carried trains in 1980. It has been transformed into a park offering views of the city from 30 feet above the street. The segment that opened in June runs from Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, to 20th Street in Chelsea, between 10th and 11th avenues. It is open 7 a.m.-10 p.m. daily. Details at www.thehighline.org.
A place familiar both to tourists and locals, Times Square, has a new feel since May thanks to a pedestrian mall along Broadway between 42nd and 47th streets. Instead of cars and traffic, you’ll find lawn chairs where you can sprawl out and soak up rays, not just neon. Herald Square, near Macy’s, where Sixth Avenue, 34th Street and Broadway meet, has also been closed to traffic to create a pedestrian zone.
There’s no swimming, but there is a new beach with 300 tons of sand on Governors Island in New York Harbor. The beach is accessible from Manhattan on the free Governors Island Ferry, which departs from the Battery Maritime Building in lower Manhattan through Oct. 11, Fridays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. If sand is not your thing, the island also has biking and concerts. Details at www.govisland.com/.
Another new urban beach with trucked-in sand is located at Manhattan’s South Street Seaport. As with Governors Island, there’s no swimming, but there is a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge, plus mini-golf, $5 for nine holes, and “Eat it Raw” happy hours 4-6 p.m. Thursday and Friday nights, with 50-cent oysters and $3 off drinks.
If you’re looking for a hotel deal in the city before Sept. 13, check out www.nycgo.com/realdeal. The program includes family-friendly accommodations and discounts for shopping, dining, arts and entertainment and more. On Fridays, consumers who use their American Express card can get an additional 10 percent savings; details at nycgo.com/summerfridays.
