August 31st, 2009 NEW DELHI - Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal Monday announced that vice-chancellors of universities in the country would be appointed by a collegium headed by an eminent person equivalent to a Nobel laureate, and not the central or state government. Sibal told reporters here: "The collegium will consist of 30 to 40 people headed by an eminent personality, lets say a Nobel laureate.

August 20th, 2009 KOLKATA - Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday evening gave away awards to eminent writers and artists of the city, including those who supported her in the anti-land acquisition movements in Singur and Nandigram in West Bengal. Altogether 12 personalities - including eminent writer and social activist Mahasweta Devi, poet Joy Goswami, veteran Bengali actor Supriya Devi, painter Suvaprasanna, dancer Amala Shankar, singer Nirmala Mishra, theatre personality Bivas Chakraborty - were honoured on behalf of the Indian Railways during the occasion.

March 7th, 2009 HOSHIARPUR - The Punjab Police Saturday claimed to have solved the murder of an NRI woman with the arrest of her husband and two others. Kuldeep Kaur, 32, a resident of Vancouver, was shot Thursday in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district, just a day before she was to fly back to Canada.

March 5th, 2009 HOSHIARPUR - A day before she was to fly back to Canada, an Indian woman based in Vancouver was Thursday shot dead by unidentified assailants at her village in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district, the police said. Kuldeep Kaur, 32, was going to the gurudwara in Lehli village near Mahilpur town, 20 km from here, when she was attacked.

December 28th, 2008 NEW DELHI - Eminent painter Manjit Bawa died in the national capital early Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 67. Bawa, well known for the vibrant use of colours in his paintings, was in coma following a brain haemorrhage three years ago.
