NEW DELHI - Delhi police commissioner Y.S. Dadwal Friday said the capital’s police is going to launch an intensive traffic drive Feb 1 and intensify penalizing people for traffic violations.

‘From February 1, we will take up an intensive traffic drive,’ Dadwal told reporters here.

‘But this year we want people to follow the motto of self-regulation. We want people to follow traffic rules and self regulate themselves. It will help in reducing the traffic violations,’ he said.

He further said that the scheme of chasing and penalizing the traffic offenders, launched last year, has been very successful.

‘We are also doubling from 210 to 420 the number of motorcycles used by traffic officials to chase and give traffic violators tickets. It will have a substantial effect on reducing traffic violations,’ Dadwal said.

‘The number of multitasking police control room (PCR) vans, which are 50 at present, would also be doubled to 100,’ he added.

‘In multitasking PCR vans, apart from the police officials, traffic policemen are also deployed. Apart from their normal law and order duties, they also check traffic violations and prosecute offenders then and there,’ a senior police officer said.
