July 6th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Out of a total plan outlay of Rs.12,165 crore for the civil aviation ministry, a sum of Rs.190 crore will be provided as budgetary support to various organisations under the ministry, the government said Monday after Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee presented the annual budget in Parliament. Out of the Rs.190 crore, India's airport developer, Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been allocated Rs.99.15 crore for development of airports.

July 6th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Impressed by its excellence in education and plans for further expansion, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Monday allocated Rs.500 million to the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). The Union Budget 2009-10 proposals said that IGNOU, which has been in the forefront of distance education, has been provided an allocation of Rs.900 million that also includes Rs.400 million for grants to state open universities.

June 26th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The government's allocation in the education sector has steadily increased but how effectively is the money being spent? - a policy research organisation questions in a recent assessment ahead of the budget in July. The total expenditure on education (by all ministries) has increased by nearly 50 percent from Rs.89,732 crore (Rs.897.32 billion) in 2003-04 to Rs.134,274 crore (Rs.1.34 trillion) in 2006-07, according to the Accountability Initiative under the Centre for Policy Research here.

June 22nd, 2009 NEW DELHI - Delhi Government on Monday revealed through its budget that it would primarily focus its attention on transport sector, urban development and water and sanitation in the year ahead. The highest share in the budget 2009-10 has been earmarked for transport sector which was given Rs 3,069 crore (about 31 per cent) followed by Urban Development with Rs 1,524 crore (15 per cent) and Water and Sanitation with Rs 1,366 crore (14 per cent).

According to figures tabled by Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaisawal in the Lok Sabha, the sanctioned strength of Delhi Police as on Jan 1, 2006 was 62,420, while its actual strength was 66, 275.

February 15th, 2009 NEW DELHI - An amount of Rs.10 billion has been earmarked in the interim budget for building infrastructure for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, an official statement said here Monday. 'The Delhi government has been allocated an amount of Rs.24.18 billion in the union interim budget 2009-10 presented Monday in parliament by acting Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee,' the statement said.
