Continental Airlines to shut center, cut 500 jobs

HOUSTON — Continental Airlines Inc. said Wednesday it is closing a call center in Tampa, Fla., and cutting 500 reservation agents companywide. The carrier cited a weak economy and customers’ growing preference for Web-based reservations.

About 100 of the eliminated positions will be in Tampa, spokeswoman Kelly Cripe said. The company is offering a number of voluntary programs to employees, including “early out” severance and leave of absence programs.

Some Tampa-based reservations agents will also have the option of transferring to other reservations centers in Houston and Salt Lake City, the carrier said. The closure will be completed by July 19, according to Continental.

Houston-based Continental said it will also offer relocation assistance to affected employees.

Shares of Continental fell 69 cents, or 6 percent, to $10.77 in midday trading as the broader markets declined. The stock has ranged from $5.91 to $21.83 over the past year.
