NEW DELHI - A group of Congress legislators from Gujarat called on President Pratibha Patil at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and sought her intervention in the state’s governance on Wednesday.

The legislators blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled government for deterioration of law and order situation in the state.

“We have demanded constitutional intervention. Now this is in the jurisdiction of Her Excellency (President Pratibha Patil) to ask for a report on the state politics or whatever is needed within Article 355. And going by the present situation, I believe there is no one safe in Gujarat except Narendra Modi (Chief Minister of Gujarat),” said Shaktisinh Gohil, Leader of Opposition in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly.

The legislators charged the state government of ruling with high-handedness and not letting the opposition to exercise their rights in the legislative assembly to have a debate on the recent hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad.

Gohil also said that instead of holding a debate, the issue was back-tracked and the Speaker of the assembly suspended Congress legislators.

Earlier, the country-made spurious drink tragedy in Ahmedabad claimed 132 lives in July. (ANI)
