Colombian paramilitary member sentenced in Texas

HOUSTON — A member of a Colombian paramilitary group has been sentenced in a Texas federal court to 7 1/2 years for plotting to acquire anti-aircraft missiles and other powerful weapons in exchange for cocaine.

Diego Alberto Ruiz Arroyave (AH’-roe-jah-veh) pleaded guilty in October to conspiring to provide material support to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, or AUC.

He was accused of participating in a scheme eight years ago to acquire Russian- and Eastern European-made weapons for the right-wing group. Cocaine worth $25 million was offered in exchange.

The people he met with were actually an undercover police officer and FBI informant. Ruiz could have received 27 years under sentencing guidelines, but prosecutors said he cooperated.
