Coast Guard says girl swept to sea by wave dies

EDGARTOWN, Mass. — The Coast Guard says three people were rescued at Acadia National Park in Maine and no others are believed to be missing after a large wave washed over a crowd watching the surf.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class James Rhodes says the wave crashed over about 20 people. The man, a 12-year-old girl and 7-year-old girl who didn’t make it back to shore on their own were rescued by a 47-foot Coast Guard vessel.

The Coast Guard says the 7-year-old girl later died.

The National Hurricane Center says the center of the hurricane was about 400 miles west-southwest of Newfoundland late Sunday afternoon.

(This version CORRECTS that the Coast Guard now says that wave washed over 20 people, not that 20 people were swept to sea by the wave.)
