China proteests Japan leader’s shrine offering

BEIJING — China’s Foreign Ministry is protesting the Japanese prime minister’s offering of a flowering evergreen tree to a war shrine seen as a symbol of Japan’s militarist past.

Spokeswoman Jiang Yu said China had expressed its concern and dissatisfaction to Japan and demanded that Tokyo handle the matter appropriately.

Prime Minister Taro Aso sent a 50,000 yen ($500) tree to Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine for a Shinto holiday on Tuesday, but did not visit.

Visits there by former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi were a major irritant to relations with China and South Korea, both of which suffered under Japanese occuption during the last century.

Yasukuni honors Japan’s war dead, including convicted war criminals.
