Chhattisgarh issues notice to 45 polluting industries

October 9th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group has agreed to pay under protest a marketing margin to Reliance Industries for the gas supplied from the Krishna-Godavari basin, over and above the price formulae of the government. In a letter to the oil ministry, the group has queried if the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries was entitled to charge the margin, as neither the company has undertaken such an exercise nor has the government's price formulae enabled such a provision.

September 16th, 2009 RAIPUR - Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh Wednesday justified the commercial tax department's decision Monday to attach a bank account of Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) to recover Rs.408 crore due as entry tax amount. "The government has right to levy entry tax and Bhilai Steel Plant should have abided by government decision," Singh told reporters here.

July 23rd, 2009 RAIPUR - Power utility NTPC Ltd has agreed to provide 35 percent of the electricity produced at its upcoming 500 MW stage-III Korba project to Chhattisgarh, a government statement said Thursday. "NTPC (formerly National Thermal Power Corp) has agreed to provide 175 MW power to Chhattisgarh from its 500 MW stage-III Korba project that will begin generation by February 2010," the statement said.

July 14th, 2009 LUCKNOW - An educational campus, owned by Bahujan Samaj Party general secretary Akhilesh Das has been charged with polluting the Gomti river, where thousands of fish have died due to discharge of hazardous effluents from it, officials said Tuesday Situated on the outskirts of the state capital, the campus has two engineering colleges, a dental college and a management school named after Das's father, late Banarsi Das, a former chief minister of the state. Das is considered close to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

July 5th, 2009 RAIPUR - A Chhattisgarh environment panel has ordered that power supply to three sponge iron units here be cut after residents of the surrounding villages protested that industries were responsible for large scale pollution in the area, officials said Sunday. A team of Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Board (CECB) raided Siltara and Urla industrial areas on the outskirts of Raipur last week amid complaints of gross neglect to pollution control measures and also for not using mandatory electro-static precipitator (ESP) machines.

February 22nd, 2009 RAIPUR - The Chhattisgarh government suffered a revenue loss of over Rs.1.85 billion (Rs.185 crore)) during 2007-08 because of 'undue benefits' provided to various companies, a report by India's audit watchdog said. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India in its report on Chhattisgarh said: 'The state government stood to lose revenue of Rs.185.71 crore due to undue benefits to the allottees such as allotment of land at reduced rates.' The report has widely criticised Chhattisgarh State Industries Development Corp (CSIDC) for its its inadequate monitoring of the implementation of several state-sponsored projects.
