Centre releases 1,158 crore to state for police modernisation

October 7th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Centre has released Rs 209.1 crore from the Calamity Relief Fund to flood-hit Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka to tackle the situation. Andhra Pradesh will receive Rs 156.84 crore while Karnataka will get Rs 52.26 crore, an official release said.

August 17th, 2009 NEW DELHI/LUCKNOW - Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Monday sought from the centre Rs.1,503 crore for building a metalled road along the 600-km porous border the state shares with Nepal, which provides a "safe" conduit to terrorists and Maoists. The demand was raised by her during a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his residence in New Delhi.

August 3rd, 2009 NEW DELHI - State-run telecom operator Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited's (MTNL) net profit nose-dived 63 percent in 2008-09 to Rs.211.7 crore from Rs.586.8 crore the previous fiscal. The public sector undertaking's turnover also fell 1.4 percent to Rs.5,250 crore in the period under review from Rs.5,329.9 crore the year before.

July 8th, 2009 NEW DELHI - A mid-term review of the 11th Five-Year Plan (2007-12) will be conducted before the presentation of the budget for fiscal 2010-11, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said here Wednesday. "I am hopeful that the next budget will address the shortcomings of the mid-term review," Ahluwalia told reporters after the commission's first meeting since the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government assumed power for a second term.

July 6th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Monday gave the country's elite investigating agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a Rs.330 crore (Rs.3.3 billion) support in the financial budget for its modernization. The CBI received Rs.71 crore (Rs.710 million) more than the last fiscal when it got Rs.259 crore (Rs.2.59 billion).

July 6th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Monday allocated Rs.30.41 billion to Delhi Police, an increase of Rs.8.43 billion from last year. A total of Rs.400 million has been earmarked for developing traffic and communication network in the national capital region.

June 22nd, 2009 NEW DELHI - Delhi Government on Monday revealed through its budget that it would primarily focus its attention on transport sector, urban development and water and sanitation in the year ahead. The highest share in the budget 2009-10 has been earmarked for transport sector which was given Rs 3,069 crore (about 31 per cent) followed by Urban Development with Rs 1,524 crore (15 per cent) and Water and Sanitation with Rs 1,366 crore (14 per cent).

May 22nd, 2009 NEW DELHI - The state-owned power utility NTPC Ltd, formerly National Thermal Power Corp, posted a net profit after tax of Rs.8,201 crore in 2008-09 against Rs.7,415 crore netted the last fiscal, an increase of Rs.786 crore, the company announced Friday. Total income increased from Rs.40,018 crore 2008-09 to Rs.45,273 crore the previous fiscal, NTPC said in a regulatory statement.

April 25th, 2009 THIRUVANANTHAPURAM - Banks in Kerala have posted a marginal growth of 6.3 percent in advances from Rs.80,131 crore in June 2008 to Rs.85,174 crore as on Dec 31, according to the State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC). The SLBC in a meeting here said loans given to the education sector reported the biggest jump when it went up from Rs.2,920 crore in June to Rs.4,049 crore in December.

January 12th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The government Tuesday appointed HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh, industrialist Sajjan Jindal and architect Hafiz Contractor as non-official directors of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), allowing it to exercise powers of the 'mini-ratna' status conferred on it last month. With the new appointments, the state-run airports operator can now exercise its powers of autonomy in terms of investment in projects and can also form joint ventures (JVs).
