California seeking buyers for OC Fairgrounds

COSTA MESA, Calif. — The first of five high-profile state properties that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger suggested selling to help close the state’s budget gap is officially on the auction block.

California’s Department of General Services said Thursday that it has issued a request for proposals for the 150-acre Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Prospective buyers have until Jan. 8 to place their bids. Department spokesman Jeffrey Young says the property could bring in up to $180 million.

Young says local officials would have to approve a zoning change if a developer bought the site and wanted to build on it.

A group of county fair board members and local politicians have formed a nonprofit that is seeking to buy the property and keep it in use as a fairgrounds.
