Calif. finds lead-tainted religious, kids’ jewelry

LOS ANGELES — California regulators say they’ve found religious and children’s jewelry with dangerously high lead levels at stores and warehouses.

The state Department of Toxic Substances Control says material taken from one children’s necklace was 74 percent lead.

The agency announced Tuesday that 33 pieces of jewelry with high lead levels had been found in Southern California. Most of them were cheap trinkets imported from China and packaged with labels promising they were lead-free.

Ingesting lead can cause brain damage or other health problems in infants and toddlers.

Regulators say it’s unclear how many other jewelry items were distributed, but they are working with the distributors to stop further sales.
