UK prosecutors want 3 suspected bombers retried

LONDON — British prosecutors say they plan to seek a retrial of three men suspected of involvement in a plot to blow up trans-Atlantic jetliners.

The three men had been found not guilty of plotting the largest terrorist attack since September 11 in a trial that ended earlier this week.

A spokesman for Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer who asked not to be identified because of government policy said authorities will seek a retrial of Ibrahim Savant, Arafat Waheed Khan and Waheed Zaman.

Three other British Muslims were found guilty in the case.

Prosecutors say the group planned to smuggle liquid explosives disguised as soft drinks onto the planes in August, 2006.

British and U.S. officials say the plotters had close ties to al-Qaida.
